LATEST NEWS
We are delighted
to announce the sale of one of our top 2009 born bull calves to
The Moss Herd owned by the North Moss Farm Partnership. The 10
month old
Galawater Gaffer Geronimo J585 has been sold for
£15,000 with semen being retained by the Galawater Herd for our
own use. A product of our ET program and sourced from Bova-Gen
Ltd, Geronimo is sired by the TC Freedom son, GH Coverboy Eric
110R and out of the G13 Steel daughter, Hoff Gammer SC 400 624.
Geronimo is the
heaviest calf ever weaned at Galawater and has a projected 400
day weight of well over 700kg. He sells with a Terminal Index of
34 and a Self Replacing Index of 42.
We are delighted
with the sale of this bull to such a high profile herd as The
Moss, but are equally as excited at the prospect of using this
very powerful and correct young bull in our own herd. We have
had high hopes for him since the day he was born.
"We at the Moss are very excited
to be able to purchase Gaffer Geromino, as soon as we saw him in
the pen full of young bulls of a similar age, he stood out and
we knew we had to try and buy him. It's not often you find such
a powerful bull with as good conformation. We would like to
thank Jim and everyone at Galawater for selling him to us and
we can't wait to bring him home" added Kevin Moores.

Our wildest dreams came
true when our Reserve Junior Champion,
Galawater Bentley H495 made 28,000 gns and stood as the High
Seller at the first February Sale in the new UA Mart at
Stirling. Huge thanks go to Mr Gordon Brookes of the "Linton
Gilbertines" Herd at Malton, North Yorkshire where he will head
up his expanding herd of top quality females. We wish the Brooks
team all the best and look forward to the offspring of Bentley
from one of the most exciting herds in the country. Bentley was
admired by all at the sale for his terrific power, top, hip
structure and correctness.
Sired
by the outstanding Rawburn Elysium, Bentley boasted one of the
most impressive set of ebv's in the catalogue. He ranks in the
top 1% for 400 day weight, 600 day weight, Scrotal, Eye Muscle
Area, Fat and Terminal Index and also in the top 5% for 200 day
weight, Milk, Retail Beef Yield and Self Replacing Index.
Bentley's
dam is no less impressive having already produced Galawater
Bentley C535 who was retained (middle picture), 2 outstanding
stock heifers and our 2nd highest selling female, the 6,000 gns
Galawater Bonita (pictured).

Galawater
scooped both the highest individual price and the highest herd
average when our "Team" of three bulls, all sired by Rawburn
Elysium, sold to a top of 28,000 gns and averaged 15,000 gns.
Notably, all three of our bulls were sold into pedigree herds.
Huge thanks go to Mr Gordon Brookes of the "Linton Gilbertines"
Herd at Malton, North Yorkshire, for the purchase of our Reserve
Junior Champion,
Galawater Bentley H495 for 28,000 gns.
Thanks
also go to Ranald Pottinger, Isauld Angus, Caithness for his purchase of
Galawater Lord Randolph H500 who made 9,500 gns. We feel
this bull has huge potential and we wish Ranald the best of
luck. He boasted the highest set of growth ebv's in the
catalogue, ranking in the top 1% for 200 day weight, 400 day
weight, 600 day weight, Eye Muscle Area, Fat, Retail Beef Yield,
Milk and Terminal Index and also in the top 5% for Self
Replacing Index.
Thirdly
and at a great price of 7,500 gns we sold
Galawater Bruno H440
to the Flemings who own the well known Stairhaven Herd in the
South West of Scotland. Bruno's dam is a maternal sister of the
dam of Bentley and a cow who we consider to be our best daughter
of Wedderlie Ebony. Bruno again sported a great set of ebvs,
being top 1% for 200 and 400 Day Weight, Fat, and Terminal Index
and top 5% for 600 day weight, milk, Scrotal, Retail Beef Yield
and Self Replacing Index.

We
are delighted to announce the joint purchase of
Mosston Muir Eline H205 for the sum of £15,000. The Elliots
of the Rawburn Herd and ourselves teamed up to clinch the deal
just minutes before she was placed Female Yearling Champion at
the Black Beauty Bonanza. Described by the judge, Doug Robertson
of the famous Coldstream herd in Canada as one of the most
powerful, correct and feminine Angus females he has seen, Eline
was a firm favourite around the ring. As well as great looks she
boasts some awesome performance and calving ebvs, having
Terminal and Self Replacing Indexes in the top 1%. The plan is
to have her calve as soon as possible and then enter into the ET
programmes of the two herds.
Congratulations
also go to the Leslie family of the Scholland Herd for their
Junior Female Championship with the Rawburn Echester daughter
Scholland Diana. Her correctness, character and beautiful flesh
made her a clear winner in the junior female classes. Well done
for putting in the huge effort to travel from Shetland down to Thainstone.

November
saw us turn our hand to showing calves for the first time at The
National Calf Show, held at The Scottish Winter Fair. We entered
3 heifer calves in the baby class in which we stood first with
Galawater Princess J608. This powerful young ET heifer is by Rawburn Echester and out of our donor cow Galawater Princess
A200. She is a full sister to Galawater Prince Charming who is
breeding so well at Galcantray.
Our
sole entry in the male classes was the ET calf
Galawater Gaffer
Geronimo. This thick powerful calf is sired by the massive GH
Coverboy and out of one of the Elliot's top Hoff donor cows,
Hoff Gammer. Geronimo is the heaviest calf we have ever weaned
when he weighed over 440 kg at just over 200 days. He and his
full brother are two of the more exciting young bulls in the pen
at the moment!!

September saw the Borders Angus Clubs annual female sale at St.
Boswells. Trade was once again brisk with the sale again having
one of the top sale averages for females during the year. Many
thanks to Lister Farms and their Farm Manager, Richard Burneston
for their purchase of both our heifers. At 6,500 gns they
purchased Galawater Duchess G344, our only daughter of Galawater
Bold King. This smart fleshy heifer is from our Duchess line.
Their other purchase at 3,800 gns was the Echester daughter
Galawater Patricia G322. They both sold in-calf to Rawburn
Elysium.

SEMEN FOR SALE
During
a recent trip to Canada for the World Angus Forum and following
a visit to the famous Hamilton Farms Ranch, Galawater Angus in
partnership with the McLarens of Netherton have secured the
semen rights of the top yearling bull
HF El Tigre 28U for the UK
and Ireland.
El Tigre is the full brother to the Overall Male Champion at the
Forum, HF Tiger 5T. Tiger was sold for $52,000 for a half share
in 2007 and has subsequently won most of the top shows in
Canada. His offspring were also much admired at the Forum and
won many of the calf classes.
El Tigre himself was sold for $82,500 for a half share and in
our opinion is ideally suited for the UK market and our own
herds. He combines calving ease and a short gestation with
performance and muscle. We plan to use him heavily on our
heifers and young cows

Early
this year we came across Lakewood Prince Maverick and
immediately came to the conclusion he was a bull we had to have
an interest in. He is without doubt the meatiest and most
structurally correct Angus bull we have seen. Purchased from
Lakewood by Rawburn he proceeded to be the all time high
scanning bull in the Rawburn program. His performance between
250 and 400 days was staggering and seemed to grow before our
eyes. This performance and scanning saw his Terminal Index
rocket to 47 in the Summer BLUP run.
A deal has been struck whereby we have full possesion of the
bull and a half share in all semen rights. The bull will be used
heavily in both herds, with semen for sale sometime in the
future.
He was shown at the Royal Highland Show where he stood second in
class and second in the Beefbreeder Interbreed Competition where
he was much admired by cattlemen from all breeds and was the
highest placed Native Bred animal.

Our final visit to Perth
Bull Sale proved to very successful when our sole entry, the
second prize
Galawater Brave Knight G273 made one of the higher prices at
8,500 gns to the partnership of Messrs Reid (Shelau Herd) and
Messrs Dunlop (Windyedge Herd). Many thanks and best wishes go
to both with their new herd bull. Brave Knight was sired by
Rawburn Echester and typically is very correct and boasted a
massive Eye Muscle Area, in fact Brave Knight had the highest
muscle score in the catalogue. He is also another success
story for our Barbara family, being another grandson of our
foundation, donor cow
Barbara Kim of Auchterforfar. A full sister to this bull has
also been retained.

2008 News

Early November saw the
Borders Aberdeen-Angus Club hold their annual sale at John Swan
and Son, St Boswells for the second time. An enthusiastic crowd
saw the 32 females sold average £2,750, again one of the highest
averages for a female in the country this year. This average is
the second highest since the sale started, on farm at Wedderlie
in 2003. Heifers sold to 11,000 gns for Rawburn Ebony F618. Our
own heifer
Galawater Bonita F194 made 6,000 gns to Mr. Brook, Malton.
Sired by our herd bull Rawburn Echester, she is out our very
productive Bonita family which descend from Newcairnie cattle.
Her dam Bonita A262 has already bred Galawater Bentley C535 who
we retained and has one of our very top bull calves born in
2008, by Elysium. A full sister to Bonita F194 has also been
retained. Photo courtesy of The Scottish Farmer.

SEMEN FOR SALE
The Summer 2008 BLUP run
saw our herd bull Rawburn Elysium F547 become the top bull for
Growth (200, 400 and 600 days) in the Breed, and has become the
first bull to break the +100kg mark for 400 days. It comes as no
great surprise as he has grown into a magnificent animal,
admired by all who see him for his size, correctness and
fantastic muscle expression. Allied to his great Growth figures
is the fact that he is currently the only bull who ranks in the
top 1% for all his growth and carcase traits.

Our 2008 calving saw the
first crop of calves by our two new stock bulls, Elysium and
Beethoven. As hoped the Beethoven were born very early and with
no problems out of our 23 month old heifers. They have great
bone for calves from a calving ease bull and are showing great
potential at the moment. The Elysium calves are something very
special from the moment they are born. They have also come
unassisted apart from a set of twins and are the quickest calves
to their feet and nursed that I have ever seen. Within days they
are showing promise of fantastic muscle and style and to top it
all, they have in general, very pretty heads. Fingers crossed.
This year our embryo calves are all either from our own donors
or a batch from two Netherton cows and sired by Elixir.
Typically the Netherton calves were all bulls except one!!

Many thanks to Messrs
Walker of the Galcantray herd for the purchase of one of our top
young bulls,
Galawater Prince Charming F103. Out of another of our Donor
Cows, Galawater Princess A200, Prince Charming was a standout
from the day he was born. A typical Chester son he has great
power, correctness and a beautiful head. He posted an
astonishing Eye Muscle Area and was just short of 700kg at 400
days..

After a series of delays
due to the Foot and Mouth restrictions, the Yearling bull,
Galawater Popeye F100 has been exported to the
Greenmount College farm in Northern Ireland. He is a very thick
son of Galawater Excalibur B381 and out of our Donor Dam,
Galawater Poppy C529. He combines great calving ease figures
with a fantastic Milk ebv of 18 and a very respectable Terminal
Index of 19.

Out of the same dam as our
herd sire Galawater Excalibur B381, this young bull,
Galawater Edition F112 was the top performer of his year in
every way. A son of Rawburn Echester D297, he posted a 400 day
weight of 748 kg and a phenomenal rib-eye of 114 at 372
days!! This measurement earned him an eye muscle area ebv of
+4.1,
the joint top in the whole breed born in 2006 and one of the
highest of all time. He also recorded the highest marbling score
in our herd this year.

This spring has seen the
addition of two young herd sires that we consider to be amongst
the best in the breed.
Rawburn
Elysium F547 (pictured here at 15 months old) is possibly a
unique combination of power, growth, length, muscle and style.
He is the product of a mating of the very heavily muscled
Rawburn Lord Ross C216 and the number three cow in the
breed for Angus Terminal Index, and one of the outstanding cows
in the Rawburn herd, Rawburn Evening Star B167. This cow is a
daughter of the breed legend, SAF 598 Bando 5175, a bull who is
the cornerstone of many of the performance herds in North
America, having no equal for growth, scrotal and maternal
traits.
Elysium himself was the
second top performing bull in the 2006 calf crop in the Rawburn
Herd where he posted an adjusted 400 day weight of 817 kg with
an eye muscle depth of 91mm and a fat depth of only 6.9 mm. He
stands amongst the very top performers in the breed, ranking in
the top 1% and in the top 5 bulls in the breed for 200, 400 and
600 day weights along with top 1% rankings for eye muscle area,
fat depth and terminal index. He also ranks in the top 2% for
milk. Elysium is extraordinarily long with a fantastic loin,
shoulder and depth of thigh.
Summerhill
Beethoven F311 (pictured here at 17 months old) has been
purchased from Angela Robertson, Nightingale Farm, Bishampton.
He is another long, powerful, deep bull with a great head and
hip structure. Beethoven has the rare combination of fantastic
growth figures with a terminal index in the top 1%, 200,400 and
600 day weight rankings all well within the top 5% and very good
calving figures (top 20% for calving ease and top 3% for
gestation length). He also ranks in the top 15% for milk. He is
in fact one of only two bulls born in 2006 to offer such a
combination. We feel he is one of the few bulls we have seen
that we can happily use on heifers without sacrificing power or
performance.
Beethoven is sired by the
Canadian bull, Young Dale Dudley 26M who was a Reserve Grand
Champion at Regina Bull Sale and is also sire of Nightingale
Defiance E264 who was retained at Nightingale for two seasons
and now stands at Blelack. His dam is a HF Data Bank daughter
whose pedigree also contains such greats as Hogan, Rito 2100 and
Stockman 365. He is heavily line-bred to the Young Dale Grace
family which has already produced such great sires as Young Dale
Hogan 3Y and Young Dale Monarch 12E.

This spring has seen the
production of what we consider to be our best calf crop yet,
including Galawater Billy the Kid G256 (pictured here at 2
months) perhaps the widest and heaviest muscled calf born at
Galawater Angus to date. This calf is by Rawburn Echester D297
and out of the Ankonian Elixir 100 daughter who has already
produced Galawater Bold Knight, exported to Switzerland in 2006.
Chester is proving himself to be one of the most consistent
breeders around with his calves and yearlings being admired by
everyone who has seen them. Excalibur has produced another super
crop of calves which look like they will be just as easily sold
as those before them. Our embryo calves this year are mainly
heifers and should add much to our programme. Our embryo
programme has also produced a couple of very interesting bull
calves.

Many thanks go to John
Byers, of the renowned Cubbyhill Herd, for the selection of
Galawater Battle Kry E980 as his new stock bull. Battle Kry
is a very correct and fleshy son of our much admired, homebred
stock bull Galawater Excalibur B381.His dam, Barbara Kim of
Auchterforfar has proven to be one of our most successful and
consistent foundation cows, with all her daughters having been
retained in the herd. Her sons and grandsons have been easily
sold, at up to 15,000gns and include her grandson, Galawater
Bold King E925, our 2007 Supreme Champion at Perth bull sale and
the bull that we exported to Switzerland in 2006. E980 boasts an
Eye Muscle Area ranking in the top 5%, balanced with excellent
Calving Ease and Birth Weight figures and a Milk value in the
top 20%.

The Galawater Herd reached
new heights at Perth in February 2007 when we lifted the Junior
and Overall Supreme Male Championship at only our second
attempt. Our dreams came true when
Galawater Bold King E295 was slapped on the rump by judge
Ian Anderson. Bold King had been shown only once previously when
he was awarded 1st prize in the junior yearling bull
class at RHASS 2006. On his return he was run with the pedigree
heifers after AI and several pregnancies are confirmed by him.
A very correct, well
balanced bull, Bold King ranks in the top 1% for Milk, and well
within the top 5% for Terminal Index, Scrotal, 200, 400 and 600
day weights. He boasted a 400day weight of 732 kg. Bold
King’s pedigree is as impressive as his performance figures.
Sired by the privately purchased Wedderlie Ebony B407, who was
in turn sired by the great Tui Blackmark and out of the 8500gns
“Horatio” daughter sold at the inaugural on-farm sale at
Wedderlie. This cow also produced the herd sire Wedderlie Ebtide,
who stands at the famous Hurdcott Herd of Lord and Lady Glendyne.
Bold King’s dam is one of
our top young cows having already produced a son at 6000gns
whilst only a two year old. She is from the most successful
family in our herd to date, the Barbara Kims. Purchased by us
from Auchterforfar they trace back to one of the earliest female
imports from Canada, Pegleebob Barbara 79E who was the first
Angus cow to be used for embryo transfer in the UK. The same
family also produced our yearling bull Galawater Bold Knight
E924 who was exported to Switzerland in 2006.
Our thanks and best wishes
go to Daylesford Organic Farms who purchased Bold King for one
of the top prices of the day (15,000gns) and who along with
another top purchase at Perth are to head up their exciting new
herd in Gloucestershire.

During October we have sold
and exported the yearling bull
Galawater Bold Knight E924 to a group of three Swiss Angus
breeders. Another heavily muscled bull, he is also a son of Jet
Eric of Newcairnie and out of a two year old Ankonian Elixir 100
daughter. He descends from the same Barbara Kim family that has
produced our 6000gns sale in February 2006 and the first prize
yearling bull at RHASS 2006. Bold Knight posted top 1% Ebv’s for
Terminal Index at +30 and Milk at +16, and a muscle depth index

since won the inaugural Winter Fair Supreme Championship.
Also on the ground are three calves out of Youngdale Tilda

have big tops and a great hip structure. We also have a very
sweet heifer out of Cudlobe Erica by the “curve bender” sire
Connealy Lead On. Lastly we have a good bull and heifer
calves by Stevenson Royce out of Coldstream Blackbird and
Coldstream Tidy Bee respectively. Royce seems to have suited
these big Canadian cows. Please see our Herd Sires and
